excited to share the film that resulted from this quick backyard photo session. i love the process, the imperfection and the surprise of the results in the end. film always gives me a warm feeling; reminds me of the nostalgia i get when i look at photographs from my own childhood. i still feel like film has an important place in my work and look forward to using this medium more and more. also, considering adding film to my portrait sessions. i think it can give my clients a “whole” experience by blending the newness of digital and the retro feelings of film. i don’t know about you, but i still <3 film!

There’s this special time I have most days with my oldest daughter, where after school it’s just the two of us. I really value this window of time, and I try to get her away from her homework or cell phone or whatever else may be calling her name, and we just get to hang. On this day it had been raining (again) and suddenly the sun came out and I was dying to photograph her with my film camera. So I begged a little (and then a little more) and she said, OK, FINE! So we tossed the blanket over her and I shot a handful of pics, thanked her profusely and we went inside. Then I realized I had no film in my camera, NOOOOO! The pics i had just taken, in my mind, were PERFECTION. So I begged again and to my surprise, she was not as reluctant as she was the first time (yay, maybe she’s warming up to my camera again?!). This time, instead of a handful, I took the whole roll. I couldn’t help myself. And I’m dying to get them back. That’s the fun of film- it’s a gift when you take the photos, and then again when you finally get to open them up after they’ve been developed. But, of course, this mom photog wasn’t satisfied with just that. I had her wait for me to go inside to get my digital camera too. I mean, really, how many times will this girl get in front of my camera! I was smitten and couldn’t help myself. Here are the digital images; loving Fall in Virginia, loving extra time with my baby girl.
and just for fun, had to share this outtake… the sunflare looks a little other-worldly to me, what do you think?!

at Christmastime last year it was important for me to do something. a lot of times we think about all the ways we can help, all the ways we want to act and then do nothing at all. i wasn’t sure how i could give back, i just knew that i wanted to do something. as a military spouse, the pressures and sacrifices of other military families are always near and dear to my heart. so this year, i gave two mini photo sessions to the moms and children of military spouses that were deployed during the holidays.
this mom and her little girls were so precious. they were about to catch a flight that evening to travel home to the mainland to be with family during the holidays. i so enjoyed our brief time together, and these girls truly were just pure sweetness~

you’ll see to my right, i had a beautiful palm tree view. and on the left… let’s just say i think someone deserves the best daddy award, hands down!

this was the 2nd photo i took today at my client’s family session at their home. i can’t wait to start culling through all of the images.
when i was leaving today, she said, “I’m really going to miss you.”
Seriously, my heart melted. I love what I do. It’s all about the people, the big people and the little people.

Culling through photos of my niece’s visit, and these just cracked me up. It was a beautiful day in Waikiki and here I was trying to play tour guide to three little girls who could have cared less, and would have rather just been having fun at home!
Gotta love the missing teeth flanking each side of the photo! And then, well, there’s always one sour apple in the bunch:)
