And now that we are so many days into this tragic state of affairs, this disaster of epic proportions, people start turning away from the news. I know I have. After days of being plugged in, I could only take so much. The story was the same day in and day out. The disaster would not change, it would not disappear. And it becomes too much, because really and truly you just feel helpless, and then selfish. Because you are safe. In your own bubble, complaining about traffic, or maybe that your back hurts. Maybe you don’t feel like making dinner, maybe mad the dog had an accident in the house. You get the picture. And so Haiti has become another one for the history books.

Except.

Well, you can help. You can still go about your life, all while reaching out a hand. One of the coolest ways to do this was through the invention of the Red Cross text donation. A small amount would be donated to Haiti just by texting a number. Incredible!

And then recently I came across a site called Switchcities, a collaboration of some amazingly talented photographers, who were sharing some of their personal work together. They put together a print auction and the concept was simple. Photographers donated a print for auction and the winning bid goes directly to charity. A win/win situation. The winning bids will be donated to Haiti AND the winning bidder gets a beautiful photographic print. The first auction was a huge success and they have just started a second auction. More exciting than the opportunity to do something very few get to do, is the the opportunity to meet some of the men and women on board the USS Ronald Reagan. These servicemembers have been at sea, and are headed home. I get choked up even thinking about it. I know a little of what they are feeling, what it feels like to miss someone you love. These men and women sacrifice so much. And their families, they too sacrifice so much. They miss things. Things they can never get back. They do this because they VOLUNTEERED to. They do it because of their strong sense of duty, their strong sense of something other than themselves. I always feel grounded when I remember those feelings. When I look at my neighbor who is stronger than strong, whose husband has been gone for several months. Or another neighbor, whose husband left today for 7 months. They barter their time, it’s all carefully calculated and it’s hard to understand how valuable that can be.

I hope to come home tomorrow with stories, and pictures of stories. I am looking forward to having this chance to share a little piece of what others do when they work for you and I, at sea, for months upon months at a time. As they say in Hawaii, I look forward to talking story with you…this should be a good one!

…and because every post needs a picture

I just came home from an Amazing photography workshop in Victoria, B.C. given by the Extraordinary team of Richard and Amy at Red Leaf Studios… only to have the Awesome opportunity to assist and 2nd shoot my first wedding with my Super Talented friend Marina Miller of Red Heart Photo. Whew! Say that ten times fast:)

My friend Marina already blogged her amazing photos from the Spectacular wedding here, but I also wanted to share this post she shared of some photos I took of her at work! It’s always FUN to see how we look in Action, and Marina 6+ mo. pregnant, and shooting barefoot on a cliff looks super FAB I must say! (photos taken by me, and edited by Marina in her super cool rockstar style!)

Anita knows her stuff. She sent me a questionnaire that asked just the right questions and really made me, for the first time, define my business and how I see myself as photographer, as a brand. And it wasn’t hard. It was almost like she was asking trick questions, questions you’re actually excited to answer but secretly give her a lot of meaning into who you are. After I completed the questions, it wasn’t long before I received in return an amazing logo. When I opened it I was like WOW! Really, WOW! A few tweaks later, and she came up with just what I had in my mind (but I didn’t even know it myself!). The telling part of it all is that I truly would have been lucky to have any of the designs she presented to me. They were all equally creative, special and somewhat a part of me. But the last one, it was a perfect fit. Kinda like finding the perfect pair of jeans. Which we all know is so hard to do. Thank you Anita, for being such a perfectionist, having an amazing eye for detail, and for really listening to my vision, and actually helping me take what I had in my head and making something concrete and fluid out of it. Forever grateful!
