sometimes twitter is just a noisy party

Photobucket

If you’re finding me here, you may be wondering, “Hey, what’s going on? I thought you had a new blog?”. And then again, maybe you weren’t wondering and I’m just having imaginary conversations in my head lol. Well, I have done some rearranging of my posts so that this is my space for me and more of my personal thoughts. I have just found that as I have grown on this journey, from creating just for me, to now creating for you and me, well I still needed a place just for me. This gives me a freedom, or at least I’m hoping it will, to continue to share what’s on my mind and to continue to write, document, and just plain breathe, which is what this space used to give me. I love my new blogsite (carriehasson.com) and I am excited to post more photos on it. But today, I have some thoughts…

I have inundated my life with social media, as I know a lot of people have. As I went on twitter today, I realized I really had nothing to say. Sorta shocking. As I was reading what others had to say I began to see twitter in a new way. I liken it to arriving at a noisy party with a room packed full of people you hardly know, if not at all, only to hear them talking about themselves ’round the clock. The twitter party never stops! And it’s not just talking about themselves. Everything is always of epic proportions, or the best, or the sweetest or the hottest or just so very busy. And all of that may be true, but I’m guessing it may not always be the case. And so in my effort to give a little spin on my twitter day I thought I’d tell you what I did:

Felt the most amazing colorful textiles and fabrics today. The smell was unreal, can’t believe I get to do this everyday. Everyone was so psyched to see my work! #Epic

translation:

I folded and washed a lot of dirty laundry today. The kids were so happy to see that I put their stuff away instead of making them do it themselves. #Boring

Trust me, I believe in twitter. I have had some amazing opportunities because of twitter (none of which I have yet to share, but some blogs are in the works). And in my opinion, there is a right way and a wrong way to use it. Twitter is too popular now to just give your followers verbal vomit everyday. And no one wants to follow someone whom they admire, but does not interact with a single person. I recently had to unfollow a photographer I admired because of this. This person was/is a compelling person who does compelling work. But their twitter was such a turn-off. Their twitter page reads like a one-way conversation. It’s as if you are physically standing in front of this person having a conversation and they are the only ones that can speak. #Unfollow.

Anyway, I think it’s great to sell your products, promote your work, share ideas, etc. But twitter is so much more than a marketing machine. And I don’t get those who @thisperson @thatperson @you @me and they have pages and pages of this on their twitter stream. Who cares how many people are following you if they’re spambots! Maybe I don’t get it? Maybe I don’t want to? And then there is the person who announces every.little.thing.they.do. Sorry, I don’t care if you took a crap at 2pm! I just don’t. Who does?!

Ok, that’s my twitter rant. I love twitter, though it is slightly weird that my anti-social media/everyone should talk face to face/why email when you can call? husband is now on (http://twitter.com/MattHasson if you want to follow lol).

I would love to hear your thoughts on twitter/facebook/blogs. Or maybe you just wanna share your favorite laundry detergent (Lately I’ve been liking Gain. The fragrance commercials really worked on me. Maybe I am completely ruining my entire twitter point by admitting that!). And if you have no thoughts, that’s ok too. I’m just happy to have a place again where I can share mine:)

nancy mitchell - i make my own laundry detergent! check out my blog! http://www.nancymitchellblog.com/blogApril 8, 2010 – 1:48 am

Jeannie - I agree with you about Twitter. It is disappointing when people just broadcast and don't interact. On the detergent issue, but also somewhat off-topic: I would love to know what a good dishwasher detergent is, because my current one (Target house brand) is terrible!April 8, 2010 – 1:52 am

joscelyne cutchens - Hey Carrie!I agree that some are not about interacting at all and that is quite a turnoff. detergent? i use tide unscented, poor jordan has allergies.April 8, 2010 – 1:58 am

Alisa Greig - love this post carrie :) i did quit the twit about a month ago, i know how you feel! i just figured i was not cool enough to get it :) and on the laundry note, i washed and dried yesterday, but have yet to fold–lol!April 8, 2010 – 2:02 am

Anonymous - ha! great blog… love the laundry "spin". I do appreciate you work with textiles!mattApril 8, 2010 – 3:51 am

Kricia Morris Photography - Carrie, this is the reason I love you. You're so YOU, which is amazing and fantastic. I wish more people would pick up on how important it is to be genuine and true to themselves. Fantastic post, I'm pretty sure what you had to say could be labeled #epic, at least in my book. xoxo!!April 8, 2010 – 3:56 am

Mel - lol, I am one of these people who broadcasts every little thing… Guilty as charged… but the answer is simple if those people you mention wind you up then just unfollow them and only follow those you find interesting. Easy, peasy, job done.April 8, 2010 – 6:51 am

photomuma - I agree, I love twitter, but I like to interact with the people that I follow, I've unfollowed lots that just don't seem to even see me or constantly retweet everything that they see. There are some days too I sit there and blink at the timeline and think I have nothing to say, so I don't, we all have our quiet moments. Now did you photograph those textiles? I did, both folded and hanging, once. Inspiration is all around, either that or I'm completely and utterly mad. Don't answer that! ;-) April 8, 2010 – 11:16 pm
